Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. While she was a small girl, she struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford began acting during her teen years and joined a member of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that this school wasn't right for her. Ford then applied to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among Ford's classmates. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate would also frequently work as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, which were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
